Lois Conner: Twirling the Lotus: Photographs from Tibet and China
The title of this exhibition is taken from the well-known Buddhist sutra. The show includes a number of Conner's tranquil studies of the lotus in various forms, made at different seasons and times of the day. The use of a `banquet' camera enables Conner to also document with sensitivity the profound changes in both the cities and countryside of Tibet and China, as seen in her studies of landscapes, street scenes, temples and monasteries. The platinum and pigment ink prints are in limited editions, and range in price from (1,500 to (10,000. They are interspersed with examples from the Rossis' collection of traditional Tibetan works, such as a haunting 18th century depiction on cloth of a deity identified by his direction, vehicle and colour as Mon bu pu tra, one of the five deities that represent mind, body, qualities, speech and activity. Another highlight is a 12th century bronze image of the Buddha in vajrasana, the style of which reflects the strong influence of Indian art on Tibetan artists during the diffusion of Buddhism from India at that time.
A photographer of contemporary landscape, Lois has spent much of the last 24 years photographing the transformation of Asia, particularly China and Vietnam. In 1982 she began to use an elongated format, inspired in part by Ming dynasty paintings. She uses the panoramic form to extend the narrative as well as embrace more than one moment concurrently. The photographs of Tibet in this exhibition were begun in 1986, the lotus project in 1995.

The Quiet Gesture: Recent Chinese Art
The Quiet Gesture: Recent Chinese Art is an exhibition that brings together the work of some of the most well-known and respected artists working in China today. While large group exhibitions of contemporary Chinese art have proliferated in recent years, many have been broad surveys intent on showing the range of art being made by Chinese artists. This more focused exhibition looks at four artists whose work deals with issues of spirituality, reflection, and history. The exhibition will take place in two locations: the Museum's garden as well as the Vaulted Gallery just inside the entrance to the garden. The use of the garden gives us the opportunity to highlight important works of outdoor art, many of which have not been seen in other recent exhibitions that have focused on painting, sculpture and photography.
